Maharashtra Introduces CET for Integrated MBA and MCA Admissions

Mumbai, Maharashtra: The Maharashtra state government has announced the introduction of a Common Entrance Test (CET) for admissions to integrated MBA and integrated MCA courses, in addition to the existing BMS, BBA, BCA, and BBM courses. This move marks the first time that a CET will be conducted for these courses, which have recently been designated as ‘professional’ by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE).

Despite the significance of this development, only about 20,000 candidates have registered for the entrance test so far. In response, registration dates have been extended until April 18 to encourage more applicants.

Principals of educational institutions have expressed concern over the low registration numbers, emphasizing the need for greater awareness about the CET. Some autonomous colleges have already started informing students through their portals. Last year, over 22,000 students enrolled in BMS courses at Mumbai University alone, indicating the potential demand for these professional courses in the state.

Mahendra Warbhuvan, Commissioner of the CET cell, highlighted the importance of the CET for ensuring better prospects for admissions, similar to BE/BTech degrees. He urged aspirants to stay updated with the CET cell’s portal for regular updates.

Several colleges, including Jai Hind, Mithibai, and NM, have announced that admissions to their BMS and BBA courses will be based on CET scores. Jai Hind College also stated that vacant seats in these courses will be filled by students who appeared for the college’s entrance test for other programs. St Xavier’s College is yet to decide on its approach but may continue with its autonomous CET.

However, Sudhakar Jadhawar, President of Unaided Educational Institutions, criticized the government for rushing into conducting the CET without adequate awareness campaigns. He emphasized the need for colleges to take proactive steps to inform students about the CET to avoid a shortage of applicants.

As the state gears up for the inaugural CET for integrated MBA and MCA courses, stakeholders are urged to stay informed and participate actively in the admission process.
